Can Diabetic Eat Ice Cream?

I’ve often been asked and often wonder if diabetic can eat ice cream like any normal people? And if you have been thinking the same – you are not alone. I’m sure even diabetic can eat ice cream – but what kind of ice cream is best – and how much can one eat – now that’s another important question to all diabetics. I’m currently reading an article on diabetic living about the kind of ice cream recommended for diabetics – but it doesn’t tell me how much sugar are in these ice cream – the Edy’s Slow Churned No Sugar Added Vanilla Ice Cream is said to be the best – because it’s so smooth and it doesn’t even taste like its low sugar. But please be advised like in anything a diabetic eat – please eat moderately. I eat some ice cream each time Missy Moo and Mr Moo go for their soft served ice cream down in Hebron – but I take like a little bit from Missy Moo’s small cone and that’s enough for me. I know a lot of you will not find it enough but if you eat like that – you won’t be deprived of anything.
Berries Good For Diabetics

If you didn’t know by now – anything ending with berries – are good for diabetics – I learned. From blueberries to strawberries and raspberries of course – they are all said to be the best fruits for diabetics. So when the outlaws had raspberries in their garden – guess who was the first to chomp the raspberries down. So remember – this summer – stay healthy – for berries are good for diabetics.
Correct Length Of Meal Time

So I was told that gobbling down my food is not a good thing for you – especially when you are a diabetic – well, well ! and here my mom taught us to finish up our food quickly so that we will make a lot of money – hahah!! yes! that was what my mother said to us. But it takes about 20 mins for our brain to catch up with our stomach it seems – and to know that you are full and truth be told – I’ve noticed it too. When I am sitting down – and eating – it almost seems like I’m not full at all but as soon as I get up – I feel like I’ve eaten too much.
So for those like myself – who are always gorging down our food – in a hurry – STOP !!! because you are eating more calories then you really need – our stomach deceiving our brain. So to lengthen one’s time for your meals – you should include food that takes longer to eat – they suggested to start with a soup first or a salad – thus allowing your brain to play catch up. And if you are still hungry after eating – wait 20mins before getting a second helping. But what if you are eating in a restaurant ? hahahaha!!! now that’s a tough one eh.
Diabetic Smoothie

Yes! you read right! a diabetic smoothie at the local Farmer`s market in town ! how awesome is that ! so of course I had to buy it – they are made out of real cranberry and bananas – and it was very sourish – i tell yer! but it`s a smoothie and if you are craving for one – you can make one yourself at home – but if you are at the Farmer`s market – pay $4 for it. But you can also try this recipe recommended by diabetic living.
| 4 | cups sliced fresh strawberries |
| 1 | medium banana, sliced |
| 1 | 6-ounce carton vanilla low-fat yogurt |
| 1 | cup ice cubes |
| 1 | kiwifruit, peeled and sliced (optional) |
1. In a blender, combine strawberries, banana, and yogurt; cover and blend until smooth. With blender running, add ice cubes, one at a time, through hole in the lid; blend until smooth. Pour into 8 small glasses. If desired, garnish with kiwifruit; serve immediately. Makes 8 (about 1/2-cup) servings.

Diabetic Living Magazine

Like all diabetic – we try very hard to keep inform and to follow the rules – what better than to buy a magazine to read about other people and how they lived with diabetes. But I don’t want to pay $7.99 + tax for a magazine – when in the United States they are selling it under subscription for under $2 ! So why can’t we have a diabetic living for Canada? *sigh*. Am I el cheapo – I don’t think so – because I can find all these info online too – so why pay that much when you don’t have to right?
Store Bought Diabetic Snacks

Like any diabetic – we are constantly looking for the right thing to eat and we all know that it sometimes is not easy – just to buy something from the store – because you don’t know how much sugar there are into it. So we are constantly looking for reports or news about things we can buy and eat easily and easily obtainable. As a diabetic – I love to snack as well – and I was told that this Honey Maid Cinnamon Roll Thin Crisps is really good in taste and great for diabetic like me to eat. So diabetics out there – if you see this snack by Nabisco – grab it – because I’m grabbing it tonite.

I can’t find the Nasbico brand – but found Mr Christie instead – and it tasted really good – too good to be true too!
Diabetes Footwear

I’ve always wondered if I needed special shoes/footwear because I’m diabetic. I know many people don’t care or cannot afford it – therefore they don’t really look into it. But as a diabetic – I’ve always wanted the best for myself – so that my condition don’t deteriorate thus causing more suffering for Mr Moo and Missy Moo. I’m one who always believed in prevention is better than cure and for the past few years – I’ve been having a lot of problems as you all know.
Not that I’m having any problems with my feet right now – no numbing or anything suspicious at all – but it’s still good to take care of your feed – instead of waiting till there is no return and having to see a podiatrist - he is a person who is qualified to diagnose and treat foot disorders. They say that if you can control your blood sugar – you shouldn’t need to have to see a podiatrist – but it’s always good to see one if you can – just because – afterall, you don’t want to get your foot or legs amputated for nothing right.
Anyhow, in the meantime, I know that I need supportive shoes or sandals – not only must your arch be supported – your toes need to have extra space too. And diabetics like myself – must not shop online for their shoes – because you need to try it out and walk around it for a bit before buying. Plus some people are covered for special shoes – so make sure you talk to your doctor and also your insurance people.
Insurance For Diabetics

I thought I should talk a little about insurance on here since I’ve been asked a lot from friends who have and don’t have diabetes – as most people have the misconception that once you have diabetes you just cannot be insured anymore. I don’t blame them for thinking this way because I too thought the same way for the longest time. But a check with Wholesale Insurance I see that it is not true – because a lot of carrier will still insure you – and the premium isn’t as high as I thought. So if you are looking for life insurance – don’t hesitate to contact your local insurance agent – or if you are like me – you might want to check it online with wholesale insurance because they have a list of carrier and compares the rate for you.
Low Blood Sugar

While many diabetics know about high blood sugar – not many of us are aware of low blood sugar also known as Hypoglycemia. I never have had low blood sugar gauging around or lower than 3.9 mmol/l. There are symptons that you can watch out for – when your blood sugar is too low – and even though I don’t drop anywhere near 3.9 mmol/l – i sometimes do get the above symptoms when my blood sugar is lowering – from headaches to sweatiness or shaky – but as soon as I eat – I’m ok.
So one of the causes for me to feel lousy – is because I must be missing my meals – sometimes I don’t feel hungry at all – but the symptoms appears and as soon as I get some food into me – i’m alright. But I was told that if I ever feel that my blood sugar is low – I should try eating some fruits and not just any carbs. Not skipping meals is very important for anyone with diabetics and I do try very hard. Sometimes when I don’t eat on time – I get really upset – because I know I will get into trouble. I know explaining it to your family or spouse can be hard – because they may not have the same need as you do – so I try to have a banana or a granola bar ready all the time. Hope this helps.
Tracking My Walk

I just went for a walk to the park with Missy Moo – the sun was out but it was still chilly but the walk did me good – I’ve decided that I should track my walk and walk at least 5000 steps a day – to keep my blood sugar checked since I’ve been eating junk of late. I know that it would definitely be easier to get my exercise when Missy Moo is in day camp during the summer rather than to wait for her to sleep at night to do my step aerobics on the Wii – coz’ I get way too tired in the evening and dozing off is my regular thing these days – so with the pedometer – I can keep track of how many steps i took and how many miles I walked. Pretty cool eh!
Recording My Blood Sugar Daily
A few years ago – my family doctor had told me that there is this blood sugar measuring device that I can use and then syn it to my computer software and it will get transfer to my doctor’s office to be kept there for reference. But I never really looked into it till today when I went looking to get a new laptop. The hp pavilion laptops were on sale and I had asked the sales person if I can order that software from them to be put into my computer – since my current family doctor’s office is all high-tech. But it looks like I have to order that software from my doctor’s office – probably free according to the sales person – and I can use it on any computer. I’m wondering if I should do it or not – for I’m worried that I might be bad for a day or two in a month and eat rubbish and my family doctor can see all my eating habits. Will it stress me up? or will it be used to keep me on my toes. Yes – getting the software and syncing the results on a daily basis for my doctor’s may be a wee bit much ? what do you think?
Food To Avoid As A Diabetic
While I tell myself – everything in moderation – since I’m diabetic and taking care what I eat – there are times that I do eat stuff that I learned today that I’m best to avoid. But that would mean just about everything I can get easily while I am at work and I can’t cook for myself. So what can I do? They say the healthier version is to have things baked instead of fried – but if one is not at home – what can you do?
One of the things I read to avoid is restaurant french fries or fast food french fries – lucky for me – i’m not into french fries a lot – even if we go to a restaurant – i usually only have the mashed potatoes or i have a side Caesar salad. So I’m safe there.
Hamburger, Fish burger or even chicken – are a no – no as well – lucky for me – i don’t like all of it – but I’m a sucker for Mcdonald’s breakfast – so I’ll have to cut down on that too and I also love hot dogs and someone had mentioned that the Smart dogs made of soy and veggie base is supposed to be alright for diabetic to eat.
And there’s also the fried chicken from our famous KFC – but all fried chicken are supposed to be avoided – because of the massive amount of calories and cholesterol. Luckily, I only eat KFC once in a while. Alternative is to bake your own chicken – like the easy bake stuff.
Store baked cookies are to be avoided too as they are loaded with sugar and corn syrup – stuff a diabetic like myself shouldn’t take. Luckily too – I’m not into cookies. *whew*
More do not eat for diabetics like myself in another post.
Blood Sugar Test

I avoid testing my blood sugar if i can – yes I’m bad! but as soon as I feel something during the day – like a headache or even a cut that wouldn’t heal – I test my blood sugar more often than usual – just in case. The other day – my heel hurt for no reason and even after spending $51 on a insole – it still hurt – so I got really worried and tested my sugar on every meal. Luckily for me – my blood sugar seems alright and in the right range – so that makes me very happy. But i’m also cautious to not be too, too happy – and eat lots of stuff with sugar in it. But i should cut down on the snacks before bedtime – that would certainly help for the morning blood sugar i think. But I’m so hungry before bed – so what can I do?
An Expensive InSole

The side of my heels started hurting again – and this time – I was quick to get an insole and I thought again – I was taking care of myself. But after spending a ridiculous amount for the insole – $44 + taxes – it still didn’t cure my heel – so I’m inclined to think that it is more than just a bad sole. I am going to have to make an appointment to see my doctor – just to make sure it is not related to my diabetes – darn!
So I’m Finally Cured But ….

So my headaches stopped – my mouth stopped hurting and my canker sores are over – but I knew it was too good to be true – last night my tummy hurt again – on the sides ! from one side to another ! awesome much! hahaha!! but this morning I am feeling ok – I figured it was the black pepper beef i had for lunch – because that was the only new thing I ate. When you get as old as I – you know you can’t just eat anything you want or liked.
Torn Between No Sugar But Lots Of Calories

I love to eat nuts and fruits – but after becoming a diabetic – I have to watch what i eat – because both nuts and fruits contains more sugar than some cheesies. How ironic right? Yup! very ! but the cheesie has lots of calories as compared to the nuts and fruits of course – but what should I eat ? nuts/fruits or cheesies? *sigh* – there is a no win situation for me is there. I’m gonna have to check with my doctor about this situation – I’m always torn every time I need a snack.
Less Pain With Needles For Diabetics

Don’t you hate taking your blood sugar? I do ! in fact I avoid it if I can – not only because I worried of the result – I just hate getting prick – it’s not that painful – but when you have to do it a few times a day – your fingers kinda get really sore. There are many suggestions on the net with regards to making it less painless – but no matter what I do – or what machine or lancet i used – it still is painful after a few times a day – so pray tell – how come someone can’t make a painless machine – making it easier for diabetics like me. Have you had a machine – you swear by? pray tell.
Banana Chips Versus Potato Chips

I’ve always thought that Banana chips were healthier than potato chips only to learn today that it’s not true!!! arrrghhhh!!! how many of you thought the same way? I bet many! and although one can find banana chips in health food store – don’t be mistaken so I’ve read. How is it not healthier I hear you asking? well apparently, banana chips are being deep fried and you know what that means right? oil!! and lots of it. And then there are high sugar content in the banana chips as well - so diabetic like me CANNOT eat banana chips!!!! so don’t get cheated now – and make sure you know what you are putting in your body!
An Hour Of Walk For Diabetic People

Spring is almost here and I can’t wait for the weather to get warmer – I made a resolution to take time to walk an hour everyday before lunch and then go for a simple lunch of salad and chicken – plus most importantly be able to sit and not have to worry about work for an hour. There is 24hrs a day and I know that I need to take time out for myself and not be stuck in my chair everyday – it’s so unhealthy. So as soon as the weather warms up – I’m getting my ipod out and start walking with a magazine – and settle down and have a quiet lunch before heading back to work. Hurray for me!
Diabetics Dining Out

Dining out when you are a diabetic can be a real pain – I used to worry a lot when I have a dinner date with my girlfriends and I also make sure I bring my Metformin with me and pop them before I start my dinner or lunch. But someone taught me not to be shy to ask about how much sugar is in the dish and what are the ingredients in them. Plus a good tip is to let the chef know that you are diabetic and they are most willing to take special care of you – and cook them with less sugar or they may even grill your food instead of deep frying them. And the best tip I got was from the restaurant i frequent – the owner always let me order whatever I feel is good for my diet/health – all I had to do was let him know in advance after I told him I was diabetic. Awesome not?
