Handicapped & WheelChair Vans

Some 20 yrs ago, I was very fortunate to meet a nice young man who was paralyzed from neck down, from a freak accident while he was playing rugby in the army. He was only 18 yrs of age when it happened but that did not deter him from moving forward and trying to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. I admired his zest and also admired those friends he had then, who tried to include him in all the activities they organized. From bowling to BBQ and even trips to discos and karaoke.

His friends would come pick him up from his home and carry him into the car or sometimes, if it was a lady friend, he would get into the car himself with much difficulty and of course the lady friend would need to know how to maneuver the wheelchair and parked it in the trunk. You and I know how heavy the wheelchair can get for a petite woman and we so wished we had handicapped vans at that time. Those days, you have to special order these vans, according to one of his sisters.

Folks who have loved ones who have mobility problems are way more fortunate than my young friend. MobilityWorks is your one stop solution to accessible and affordable vans, specially designed and made for those who has mobility problem. Believing in honest business practices, integrity and treating the disabled with respect. They go beyond their call of duty by providing an onsite service department that can handle the maintenance requests for handicap or wheel chair vans. No matter what your needs may be or your budget, you can speak with any team member from MobilityWorks, for they really take care of you and have your best interest in mind.

Diabetic Can Eat Too

A few years ago, when i learned that I was diabetic.. i was devastated.. and like most ppl wonder what we can eat and what we cannot. In fact.. i was so obsessed with testing my sugar level after and before every meal.. drove myself insane .. during those early days. But let me assure you that after living as a diabetic for so many years… having diabetes does not mean having to shop for special foods or preparing individual meals.

I now fill my plates with more colorful vegies and fruits, whole grains, small amounts of lean meat and low fat milk and dairy. I also eat fish, beans and lentils more often. Focusing on variety and moderation is the key to a healthy living. And one do not have to sacrifice the great taste of food because you have diabetes. All food fits.. eat with moderation.

Progress In Health Appt

I finally managed to get in to see the family doctor today… and not without much changes from the doctor’s office. I did get a referral to see my gynae (the office needed a referral, because i haven’t seen him for a few years now). The doc said.. my fibroids were huge.. as if i was 20 weeks big. And after some feeling of the tummy area, he too agreed that i should remove it.

Even got a date with the ultra sound department for the next day.. at 8am.. which i normally wouldn’t take.. since it is so early but if i didn’t take it.. i had to wait to August.. so they said. Ridiculous right..?? yes.. the hospital certainly isn’t patient friendly here.

Obesity Ranks High In Town

It is pretty sad .. to see not only adults are obese in this town.. but so are the kids.  In an article I read in Parent’s Time, a doctor told a mother .. that her child would always be fat .. straight at her face.  That’s sad .. and not very tactful of that doctor, but the facts are there .. that the western children are really overweight.. compared to our Asian kids.  Adults can take Alli but for children, healthy eating is the way to lead a healthier life.   For all mummies out there.. eating right starts from the home.

Burn Those Energy

For those who knows us .. and our kid, you would know how much energy she has.  Yes.. from the time she wakes up.. till the time she goes to bed..  she is a non-stop energizer baby.  I kid you not..!   We think alot about ways to burn that energy away.. so that she will be tired enough to sleep at night.. because she doesn’t fall asleep till midnight.  A mini trampoline had been something we were looking for, for indoor use because of the long cold weather we have here.  Lets hope it helps.

Healthy Food Too Pricey

As many as 120,000 Nova Scotians do not have the money for healthy foods on a regular basis, according to a new study.

I am not surprised about it.. because food is really expensive here.  We have been really blessed and am able to buy as healthy as we want.. but not everyone.  And for those who can .. but don’t care.. like giving pizza and pop to their kids are young as 3 yrs old.. i sure feel bad for them.

The 2007 food costing report, released Tuesday, puts the average monthly cost of a nutritious, no-frills diet for a family of four at $648.33, up 13 per cent since 2002.

Food is one of the most costliest things we spend on.. on a monthly basis.  We are only a family of 3 .. yet .. we spend as much or more than the above.  A mother helping out in the research had said.. that it was cheaper for her to buy a roll of bologna and french fries instead of a roast, potatoes and carrots.  Bologna is the cheap steak of the south enders.

Video Game For Stress

Hehehe!! this i’ve gotta laugh at. A new videogame was created by researchers at Montreal’s McGill University to help cut stress. Oh my..!! what else will they come up with next..??? This game is said to be able to reduce production of the stress hormone cortisol. The game trains players to focus on positive feedback in social situation and is based on the emerging science of social intelligence. There will be more improvement made for this kind of game. From helping people to cope with social anxiety of public speaking or meeting new people, to helping athletes concentrate on their game. The game is called MindHabits and playing 5 minutes a day can reduce one’s stress. At $19.99, i wouldn’t mind getting it for someone who might be in that situation.

Keep Those Burglars Away

In our store, we didn’t put up motion sensor lights till we got broken into one year. Reason being was .. we did have motion recording .. in the store.. but that didn’t help the cops because it was way too dark to see the features of the burglars. So we invested on some motion sensor lights.. to be prepared for the next time. Of course no one wants to be robbed or broken into .. but we are prepared now.

Eat Sardines To Fight Diabetes

This is the first that i’ve heard but yes.. kids with a family history of Type 1 disbetes can cut their risk of developing the disease if they eat a diet of rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. This suggest that people might be able to develop nutritional interventions to prevent diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is the most common form of childhood diabetes and occurs when the immune system starts attacking insulin producing pancreatic cells. The risk of developing Type 1 diabetes is significantly higher if there is a family history.

Omega 3s are found in fish especially salmon, herring and mackerel, as well as flaxseed oil, walnut and soybeans. You can also try finding those Omega 3 enriched eggs if your child doesn’t like fish.

Paying For Dental Work

Dental work is not covered by our local medical insurance that we all get for being either a citizen or a PR.  For my daughter, if she needed dental work after the age of 12, we will have to dip into our savings accounts.  And you know what they say.. as soon as the coverage expires, that will be when she would need work done.

Am I Menopausing?

With my menses being so erratic, I’ve often wonder if I am menopausing..?? afterall, I am already 43. And if i remembered correctly, my mother started menopause young too. A check on some medical journal, tells me that some women continue to menstruate normally until the onset of menopause and then simply cease to have periods. But i remembered in my mother’s case .. it wasn’t the case. A woman going through menopause can expect to see a variety of changes.

Menopause at a Glance

menopause.gif

It’s is funny how many people has different ideas about what menopause is all about and the kind of changes, so here are some myths and reality about woman who are menopausal.

Myth: Menopausal women are unhappy and depressed.

Reality: Most women cope very well with the physical challenges of menopause. Serious mental health problems do not increase. While some women may experience emotional distress, this is often related to sleep disturbance and deprivation due to hot flashes.

Myth: All women going through menopause are plagued by hot flashes.

Reality: About 80 percent of American women experience only mild symptoms, or none at all, during menopause. When hot flashes do occur, in most cases they are mild and disappear after a few months, rarely persisting for more than 2 or 3 years.

Myth: Menopause is the end of your sex life.

Reality: Libido, or sexual desire, does decline with aging, but many women continue to enjoy a satisfying sex life deep into old age. Some women find sex more enjoyable after menopause when concerns about pregnancy are past.
